Mechanicsburg Area School District students living within the 1.5-mile (elementary) or 2.0-mile (secondary) threshold are considered walkers, provided those living within these thresholds do not have to cross or walk along hazardous roadways as determined by PennDOT.

Walking to School

Walking to school can be a healthy mode of active transportation for students when done safely. Walking can benefit student well-being, connection to community, and the environment. 

Parents, please consider these factors and safety recommendations when allowing your student to walk to school:

• Choose a safe, quiet route

• Practice the route to school with your student

• Utilize sidewalks and crosswalks

• Be visible, wear bright or reflective clothing

• Avoid distractions (no phones or headphones)

• Obey signals and signs

• Consider walking to school with a neighbor or friend

The walking routes identified in this document are provided as suggested “safe routes” based on currently available information and reasonable safety considerations. However, the Mechanicsburg Area School District makes no guarantees regarding the safety or condition of these routes. Conditions may change due to weather, construction, traffic patterns, or other unforeseen circumstances. Crossing Guards

Elementary crossing guards are staffed at various intersections to assist students traveling between the hours of 7:00-7:50 AM and 2:05- 2:45 PM.
